markdown-font-lock-extend-region is a natively compiled function defined in markdown-mode.el.

Extend the font-lock region to cover whole blocks.

Used in font-lock-extend-region-functions. Inline constructs such as bold and italic may span several lines within a block, so fontifying a region that begins or ends in the middle of one would miss the match entirely.
